Antibacterial peptides and the outer membranes of gram-negative bacilli.

چکیده
Major problems are being experienced in human medicine from antibiotic resistant bacteria [ 11. Furthermore, no new chemical class of antibiotics has been introduced into medicine in the past two decades [2]. Although many antibiotic structures have been subjected to intensive chemical manipulation to yield novel derivatives with extended activity spectra, resistance to such antibiotics has usually emerged quickly. An ideal antimicrobial agent, in the antibiotic resistance era, would be one that does not suffer intrinsic or induced resistance problems, or one that directly attacks a common resistance mechanism. Antibacterial peptides that represent a conserved theme in host antimicrobial defences throughout nature are of great interest in this regard and potentially provide the first novel class of antimicrobial agents since the introduction of nalidixic acid in 1970.

GRAM NEGATIVE BACILLI IN BURNS
In a period of nine months, 225 strains of Gram-negative bacilli isolated from burns were identified by a variety of tests in two burn centers in Tehran. The most common species were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter agglomerans, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Many strains of acinetobacter spp, providencia spp, proteus spp, ser...
متن کاملInteraction of cationic peptides with bacterial membranes.
A common feature of cationic peptides is that their site of action is at the membrane due to channel formation, and that they tend to possess strong selectivity towards their target membrane. For example, although moth cecropin and bee melittin are members of the same family of peptides that adopt amphipathic a-helical structures, the cecropins are strongly antibacterial and demonstrate minimal...
متن کاملInvestigating the Antimicrobial Efficacy of Liposomal Vancomycin in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria- A Preliminary Mechanistic Study
Outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is a permeability barrier to many antibacterial agents, including the glycopeptide antibiotics such as vancomycin hydrochloride and as a result these antibiotics are ineffective against Gram negative bacteria. Different strategies have been described to overcome such limitation, including application of nanoparticles, as was shown in our previous studies...

Introduction: Fiberoptic techniques have been used for diagnosis and also for treatment of gastrointestinal disorders very largely. Infection is a complication of endoscopy and fiberoptic endoscopy may serve as vehicle for transmission of infection. Methods: Before doing gastroscopy, all parts of the endoscope were disinfected (as normally done in the ward). Then, samples for culture were take...
متن کاملThe effect of silver nanoparticles on Gram-negative bacilli Resistant to Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase Enzymes
Abstract: Background and objectives: Antibiotic resistant to Antimicrobial agents is one of the most important concern in hospitals, which can lead to increased costs, treatment fails and mortality rates. The aim of this study was identification of Gram-negative bacilli resistant to extended-spectrum β-lactamase Enzymes (ESBLs) and determination of the effect of silver nanoparticles on the...
